Achim Leistner is the Senior Specialist of CSIRO, a position he assumed in 1997. In 2007 he was promoted to Research Project Officer with CISRO Australian Center for Precision Optics. Evidencing his exceptional proficiency in his line of work, he became a Fellow of CISRO’s Division of Material Science and Engineering. Achim is actively involved in consulting services on ACPO’s optical fabrication project developments and in research and development for the advancement of precision optical techniques. He enjoys an impeccable reputation in his line of work for his extensive knowledge and skill base in optical fabrication, optical metrology, engineering, and materials science.

Achim is credited for being the only one able to develop a technique to fabricate one of the roundest objects in the world, a 1kg single crystal silicon sphere of extraordinary roundness and surface quality as a measuring artifact for the redetermination of of the Avogadro constant, leading to the redefinition of the kilogram that is based on a natural constant in nature, the silicon crystal. The sphere was the vital measurement artifact necessary in establishing the number of silicon atoms/converted to Carbon12 atoms that will make up a kilogram. Achim states, “This project is of great significance and importance to all science, in progress for more than four decades already the project was carried out by an international consortium of nations including Germany, Italy, Japan and the US.”

Despite acquiring a vast part of his remarkable expertise through his professional experience, Achim Leistner also earned a Certificate in Precision Optics, Geometrical Optics, Optical Design Drawing, and Mathematics from Optic Carl Zeiss Jena Technical College. Additionally, he served as past member of the Australian Optical Society and has also been serving for a number of years on international conference working committees for SPIE and the Optical Society of America.
