Baningi Mkhize Becomes a Member of the South Africa Business Network

Drawing on his results-oriented and self-driven personality as well as on his innate intellectual curiosity, Baningi joined the Perinatal HIV Research Unit in 2010 in his double capacity as Principal Investigator and Director. The Perinatal HIV Research Unit or PHRU is the research branch of the University of the Witwatersrand and was established in 1996. Based at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, PHRU is one of the largest HIV/AIDS research centers on the African continent. The Perinatal HIV Research Unit engages in adult, child and adolescent HIV treatment and prevention research entailing numerous clinical trials as well as influencing policy and advocacy concerning HIV positive people.

Baningi Mkhize is the clinical research site leader responsible for initiating and conducting trials as well managing staff with the Perinatal HIV Research Unit in Soweto, Johannesburg. His career journey incorporates various leadership capacities including Chief Medical Officer for the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health, Principal Medical Officer for the Gauteng Department of Health and Occupational Medical Services Manager for Eskom.

Endowed with outstanding communication skills and defined by a continuous hunger for knowledge, Baningi holds a reputation for excellence for his outstanding abilities in project and people management, financial and strategic planning, research methodology, incapacity management, clinical research, and occupational health. He is also a seasoned medical practitioner with special interests in occupational health, HIV, research, obstetrics and gynecology.

Despite obtaining a considerable amount of his expertise through his professional experience, Dr. Mkhize also earned a Bachelor’s Degree of Medicine and Surgery from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, a Post-Graduate Diploma in Occupational Health from the University of the Free State and an Advanced Certificate in Applied Management from Potchefstroom University. Dr. Mkhize is currently studying towards the MBA degree, which he is expecting to complete in 2014.

Evidencing his proficiency in the field, he is registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa, and is a member of the South African HIV Clinicians Society and the South African Society of Occupational Medicine. He also received Eskom Manager’s Award for Service Excellence in Occupational Health in 2000. His clinical research site has just completed participation in a multi-site international clinical trial that is investigating the use of oral and vaginal products for the prevention of HIV infections; the results will come out in March 2013.
