Kalaivani Nadarajah Joins the Exclusive Ranks of Stanford Who’s Who

SELANGOR, MALAYSIA, January 4, 2013 /Stanford Who’s Who/ -- Stanford Who’s Who proudly announces the addition of Kalaivani Nadarajah to the ranks of professional individuals as a result of her work in the higher field of higher education. As Associate Professor with the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia as well as throughout her entire career, Kalaivani has consistently demonstrated the dedication, vision, and skills required to be considered among the best. Kalaivani is also the current President for the Organization for the Women in Science for the Developing World (formerly known as TWOWS) Malaysia Chapter.

Kalaivani is currently an Associate Professor for Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. Her field of expertise is in Microbiology specifically in the area of plant-microbe interaction. Her research focus over these years has been on plant diseases in Malaysia, using rice as the model plant system to study the molecular biology, omics and systems biology of host-microbe interactions. Kalaivani is also highly regarded for developing conventional and transgenic rice line strategies, the development of biological control agents against devastating plant pathogens specifically against rice and oil palm, and elucidating the mechanism underlying processes such as infection, proliferation, resistance, tolerance and susceptibility. She has also diversified her research from focus on biotic stress to also include abiotic stresses.

Due to her strong base in Microbiology Kalaivani has research experience in areas such as water quality, and isolation and screening of microorganisms for various commercial potentials such as bioremediation.  She is also involved in the formulation of standards and regulations on biosafety, biosecurity and bioethics in research pertaining to microorganisms.

Dr. Nadarajah has had over 130 publications since 2000 and has also secured millions in research funding. She works in collaboration with other colleagues within Malaysia and also with researchers at the International Rice Research Institute, John Innes, Scottish Crop Research Institute (now The James Hutton Institute), Tamil Nadu Agricultural University just to name a few.

Paralleling her work as Associate Professor, Kalaivani is also the Associate Fellow at the Centre of Water Research and Analysis. Due to her tract record of securing grants and her expertise in the field she has been appointed as the Deputy Chair of Research at the School of Biosciences and Biotechnology, Faculty of Science and Technology, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. She is also a permanent member on the Research Fund Evaluation Panel for the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, Malaysia.

During her collegiate career Kalaivani earned a Master’s Degree in Fungal Genetics from the School of Life Sciences, National University of Malaysia, an MBA in Business Administration from the London Business School, and a PhD in Plant Molecular Biology from University of East Anglia. In addition, she is a member of the American Biological Safety Association, International Association of Plant Biotechnology, American Society for Microbiology, American Society for Plant Biologists and the Society for Industrial Microbiology and Biotechnology amongst many other professional organizations in plant and microbiological research.
