Ms. Kau Poh Moi Joins The Class Of Stanford Who’s Who

SINGAPORE,   June 27, 2012 /Stanford Who’s Who/ -- Ms. Kau Poh Moi has earned recognition in the exclusive ranks of premier professionals with Stanford Who’s Who. It has been a journey of 32 years of ongoing learning in the learning field for Ms. Kau, who in the past three decades has navigated changes in learning technology/design, and gained insights to the business of performance management, and competencies development for Learning Professionals. Due to her multi-disciplinary background in biology, human resource development and educational communication and technology, Ms. Kau integrates the findings from many relevant fields to bring holistic treatment to her solutions, breaking away from the typical silos in the industry.

Ms. Kau’s interests in organizational and learning psychology and anthropological interests in user behavior, also known as ethology, have added greatly to her solutions. Aware of the shortage of quality professional Learning Designers and the challenges it brings, Ms. Kau started a one-of-its-kind Learning Design Apprenticeship programme in India [Bangalore]. Her dream is to bring this programme to ASEAN countries. While she addresses the core competency in the functional and technical needs, Ms. Kau has also intentionally embedded life skills and character development in the experience to groom Learning Designers with the ‘x’ factor. One key focus is stakeholder engagement. It is her aspiration that these would be the 5% in the industry who will rise up the ranks fast and begin to influence their organizations and eventually the industry as movers and shakers.

alacarteLEARNING [Singapore] was incorporated in 2000 when multi-media learning was just taking on the shape and form of e-learning. At that time many tried to hard sell e-learning as a panacea. The name of the company was selected to refute the idea of ‘one size fits all’. Over the years, it has remained as a very small boutique consultancy and design and development company. It offers learning design services to the corporate sector, building learning resources to meet business objectives and focusing on the human capital as strategic pillar for clients.

Primer Learning Solutions [India] was incorporated in October 2010 to groom and coach the next generation of Learning Designers with the rich integration of multi-disciplines. Ms. Kau has also added a real world context to her apprenticeship programme so that young professionals are exposed to the harsh realities of the work world within a controlled environment. Her graduates are ready for deployment upon entry to any organization.

It has been a challenge to promote this value proposition to potential candidates because the market is hiring aggressively and indiscriminately. Ms. Kau states, “Many prefer academic certification to show and would rather pay to learn theories. The other big hurdle to leap over is the perception that Asians cannot be better than their Western counterparts. Asians know Asians best and Asians can help Asians break through more effectively.”

Ms. Kau is pioneering solutions, amidst stakeholders who have not yet sized up the real gain and potential loss of status quo, which requires a lot more perseverance and a dogged belief in one’s own vision.

She shares, “The road of a pioneer promises mistakes, discouragements, misjudgment, lack of recognition, lots of complaints from the disgruntled, minimal gratitude from those who benefitted, lack of support from those who verbally speak praises, surrounded more by opportunists than genuine partners. The ‘scratches’ & ‘scars’ are what a pioneer takes away from the journey but the future talents who walk on that path are the delights of the pioneer.”

Though Ms. Kau has faced numerous challenges she maintains the joy of seeing satisfied clients [the learners] and the affirmation that comes from walking through her own fears and doubts, all well worth the sweat. Ms. Kau does not chase after success and does not parade accolades to brand her success. She credits the problems and challenges as the best teachers in her career, and on-going certification from the school of hard knocks.

She states, “Life’s MBA is the best certification. Such a journey is not possible if there is no clear direction, if there is no beacon, if there is no light upon the path, if there is no way to discourse on the doubts, if it depends solely on human strength and cleverness. I am extremely grateful to have God as my CEO, CFO, and Marketing Director. Also He is the wisest counselor and my confidant.”

During her collegiate career, Ms. Kau earned a Master’s degree in Human Resource Development from Marymount University and a Master’s degree in Educational Communication and Technology from New York University. She served as a Reviewer for the Ascilite Singapore 2007 conference papers. Ms. Kau was also the recipient of the Most Engaging E-Learning award in 2003 from IDA, Singapore. In addition, she participated in an industry roundtable for IDA, Singapore in early 2000 for manpower development for e-learning. Ms. Kau had served as a facilitator at TechLearn ’98, organized by MASIE Centre in Orlando, Florida.
